Derwent Regency Festival at Narryna

This is the opening event of the Derwent Regency Festival, 28th November - 1st December 2025: Celebrate the Regency era in style and fun with events including a Regency evening at Narryna Heritage Museum, dance workshops and a Jane Austen Grand Regency Ball in the fine St James Church Hall in New Town, a Garden Party of dancing, music, history and delicious period food in the fine garden of historic Runnymede, and a music and history sail on the majestic tall ship, the Lady Nelson. Karen is the author of sixteen books - historical fiction, historical fantasy, YA fantasy, and one non-fiction. She was an academic for over 20 years, a newspaper columnist and social commentator. She has won awards for teaching and has taught throughout Australia and in The Netherlands and keynoted at many education conferences.

This event is a great opportunity to meet the author and to enjoy our current exhibition, “A Small Nip of Tasmania’s Whisky History”, which will be concluding on the 30th of September.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Narryna Heritage Museum will be holding an event focused on the resilience, resourcefulness, and contributions of the women who lived and worked in colonial Tasmania. This morning tea and illustrated talk will highlight the lives of the Haig family, particularly Elizabeth Haig, the first mistress of the house, and the convict women who were assigned to work in the Haig household in the 1830s and 40s. This event aims to raise awareness of women’s roles in shaping Tasmania’s early colonial history and explore the challenges they faced in areas such as economic security, leadership, safety, and health and wellbeing. By sharing these stories, we hope to promote women’s achievements, reflect on their struggles, and foster a deeper understanding of their impact on Tasmanian society.

Visiting Narryna today it is easy to imagine the comfortable and privileged lifestyle enjoyed by its early colonists. By contrast, the convict servants, who were often unsuited to meet the requirements of domestic service, struggled with laborious tasks, including cooking, cleaning and caring for the children. Under the instruction of the ‘house mistress’, including Elizabeth Haig and Sarah Walker, this tour explores the challenges associated with managing the household - especially those assigned to the Haig family. These women were no shrinking violets - they were rebellious, resourceful and resilient!

Join us for a captivating, illustrated talk that follows the life of the house’ first mistress, Elizabeth Haig. These challenges were intensified by wider economic and social issues in Van Diemen’s Land in the late 1830’s and early 1840’s. Join us to hear about one woman’s determination and ability to ensure the survival of her family.
